Spreadin’ the Word

Are you familiar with “The Butterfly Effect”?  This is a philosophy presented to the New York Academy of Science by Edward Lorenz in 1963.  His theory was that “a butterfly could flap its wings and set molecules of air in motion, which would move other molecules of air, in turn moving more molecules of air – eventually capable of starting a hurricane on the other side of the planet”.

Preposterous!  Or is it?  I have no scientific proof, but I firmly believe in every fiber of my being that everything we do has far-reaching effects.  I picture it as dropping a pebble into a very still lake.  The ripples extend out, farther and farther, continuing in every direction.  They keep going until they reach the far shores.  Several years ago, when I was teaching religion to six year olds (or trying to!), we discussed how to show kindness and love in the world.  I dimmed the lights and gave each child a glow stick.  Child #1 snapped his glow stick and got it glowing, child #2 saw the stick glowing and snapped hers, then child #3 and so on.  Pretty soon the entire room was aglow.  All it took was one person to get it started.

The reason why I’m posting this is because Marty (my husband) and I passed the “Values.com”, #Pass It On billboards while driving today.  I’ve passed them numerous times and always take note of them, but I never really thought about their purpose until Marty brought it up today.  So like any good internet user I looked them up when I got home.  These messages are posted by the Foundation for a Better Life (www.values.com).  This is a nonprofit organization founded in 2000.  Its objective is to promote positive values and to encourage people to pass them on.  Their message is communicated through movie theaters, on TV, on billboards and on the internet.  The Foundation for a Better Life believes that people are basically good and that we all could use the occasional reminder.  The funding is donated by promoted by broadcast and print media companies.  The celebrities featured all allow their likenesses to be used without cost to promote these values.

Foundation for a Better Life is joined by its sister organization, Random Acts of Kindness.  Random Acts of Kindness is a site where people share the kind acts they have done and have witnessed other people doing.  These sites are full of ideas and inspiration.  People from all walks of life write in and share the acts of kindness they have done or witnessed.  They have a Random Act of Kindness day (11/13/2015) (Worldwide), Random Acts of Kindness week (Feb 14 – 20, 2016), and Random Act of Kindness day in the US (2/17/16).  Visiting their site is guaranteed to give your day a lift.  You can find it at https://www.randomactsofkindness.org.

Do you have any acts of kindness, large or small that you do to make the world a kinder, gentler place?  Would you like to share them on this site?  You know the old saying, “Two heads are better than one.”  Well, imagine if we put all our heads together to think of ways to make things better.  We could have this whole world aglow.

Well, my brain has decided to call it a day, so I guess I will too.  Until the next time. . .

Be gentle with yourself,

“There is only one thing stronger than all the armies of the world. . .and that is an idea whose time has come.”
