I was at a local craft fair last Saturday and spotted a very interesting stand for an organization called Operation Warm Hearts. According to their mission statement, their mission is to nurture the spirit with caring and kindness, and provide warmth through clothing to our local community.
Think one person can’t make a difference? Operation Warm Hearts began in December 2014 by just one person, Emily Gochenaur. She was determined to make a difference for the needy in South-central Pennsylvania.
Her enthusiasm was contagious, and soon family and friends joined her mission, knitting, crocheting and donating supplies.
In 2015, Operation Warm Hearts held their first Knit-a-Thon to encourage others to join in their efforts. This event resulted in 40 items available to warm up our neighbors.
There are many, many ways you can help out this organization, all from the comfort of your own home. You can knit or crochet for them, either the traditional way, or using the “looms” which are available in stores. You can donate supplies, thick yarn (Hometown USA), or large ziploc bags (1, 2 or 10 gallon XL bags, 2 yard size fleece fabric or the pre-cut kits, packing tape or paper case boxes or larger boxes. And, monetary donations are always welcome.. Operation Warm Hearts is a 501(c)(3) organization, so all donations are tax-deductible. You can donate through PayPal or send a contribution directly to them at We look forward to growing our community connections, and continuing to spread the warmth all across Central Pennsylvania! Donations of items can be sent to Emily Gochenaur, Operation Warm Hearts, 514 Elmwood Ave, Mechanicsburg PA 17055. Cash donations can be sent to their address, or via their web
