Gobsmacked!

I was listening to XM Sirius radio today and was seriously gobsmacked.  Are you familiar with the word?  It means utterly astounded, astonished or bemused.  My reason for this astonishment was that a gentleman called in to share the fact that he was 13 years cancer free today.  He went on to say, “Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me.”  And then he cried.  He cried on the radio.  These are some sad, scary times.

Then I saw a quote from Anne Frank in my Facebook feed.  “Terrible things are happening outside. . .poor helpless people are being dragged out of their homes.  Families are torn apart; men, women and children are separated.  Children come home from school to find that their parents have disappeared.”  (Jan. 13, 1943)

I’m not sure if I’m going to post this, because it is kind of “in your face”, but have you ever heard the saying, “Actions speak louder than words?”  How many songs have you ever heard exhorting us to “Love One Another”, and “Love is All We Need”?  How about “Black and White” and “Ebony and Ivory” or “Man In the Mirror”?  I could go on and on.  In fact, when I graduated from high school our class song was “Let There Be Peace On Earth”.  I’m not trying to cast blame or find fault, because when I’m listening to these songs or thinking about them I am 100% in the moment, then I go out into the world and get angry or annoyed, or feel inadequate or, worse yet, uncaring, and where does that leave me?  Talk is cheap, and for as much as I try, I am probably the cheapest one.

After giving this a lot of thought, it dawned on me that there are many ways we can make the world a better place that don’t involve a major effort or cost a lot of money.  All we have to do is make a commitment to be kind and thoughtful to everyone we meet.  That’s it.  I will try to do kindnesses, large and small.  This won’t be easy and I know I will slip back into old habits, but I will keep trying.  We can’t keep going down this road of hate and anger, it gets us nowhere but destruction.

We were blessed with a beautiful world and beautiful people on it to befriend and love.  Let’s go for it!  We have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Spread love,

Cindy
