Stepping Away From Plastic

Our whole world, and everything in it is choking to death on plastic waste.  As individuals we can’t change the whole world, but we decided to change what we can – ourselves and our habits.  We began our journey away from plastic by reducing our reliance on plastic bags.  I hate those things anyway, they always seem to multiply when your back is turned.  We are moving to reusable bags for our shopping and if we do get stuck with plastic bags, we deposit them in the collection bins.  We ordered stainless steel straws for use at home, and foldable stainless steel straws for use when we are on the go.  Next, we ordered the large smoothie-size straws.  They work great for thicker liquids.  I have been ordering some items from the Zero Waste Cartel .

My last order included Eucalyptus Steam Discs.  These are wonderful.  You drop one of these in your shower and the steam relaxes you and opens your sinuses.  These come in a glass jar which can be reused or recycled.  I find they come in handy when I have a headache or cold, or just when you want some relaxing vapors.

And then someone pointed out the fact that our toothbrushes are plastic.  We use them for a while and then toss them.  I never really thought about it but that little plastic toothbrush is going to be around a lot longer than I am.  So I ordered bamboo toothbrushes with charcoal infused bristles from a company called Isshah.  At this point, my husband was starting to get a little skeezed out.  These were unlike anything he had seen before, but I can tell you that they don’t taste any different than any other toothbrushes.  They are numbered so you can tell which brush is which.  When my brush starts losing its zip, I just drop it in my compost bin.

And last, but not least, I an orange crush shampoo bar to my order.  When you read the statistics, approximately 550,000,000 plastic shampoo bottles end up in landfills every year.  These shampoo bars leave no plastic behind, and if you keep the bar dry between uses it can last for over 90 times.  I like those odds.  This thing smells great, too.  If you go onto Zero Waste Cartel’s website, you can find a ton of fascinating and useful information to help you eliminate or cut down on the amount of plastic waste we all generate.

Okay, now onto toothpaste and deodorant!  Wish me luck.
