I received my copy of “The Patriot” in the mail today.  The Patriot is the official magazine of the Fisher House Foundation, Inc. (www.fisherhouse.org)  All I can say is, Wow!  I had no idea how much they do for our military and veterans and their families.  To give you a small idea of what they do, they operate a network of homes where military and veterans’ families can stay at no cost while the person is receiving medical treatment.  These homes are located close to the VA medical center or hospital they serve.  Like Ronald McDonald House, they provide temporary housing for the family at no cost to them.  The family can focus on the patient, rather than worrying about how they are going to pay for their lodging.  So far, the Fisher House Foundation has saved military families approximately $500 million in lodging and transportation costs.  That equates to 9.5 million days of lodging, 400,000 families served in 86 Fisher Houses.  They also operate the Hero Miles Program, using donated frequent flyer miles and funds to transport families close to their loved ones.  They have a Hotels for Heroes program, using donated hotel points to allow family members to stay at hotels close to the medical centers.

The Fisher House program was started in 1990 by Zachary Fisher and his wife, Elizabeth to help out military members and veterans.  Thirty years later, it has grown to the movement it is today.  The Fisher House Foundation has received a four-star A+ charity rating from Charity Watch and Charity Navigator.

People of all ages and from all walks of life conduct fundraisers for Fisher House.  I read a story of how an 11 year old girl and her mom raised $1,597.42 for Fisher House with a lemonade stand.  This was her seventh year of fundraising activities.

If you would like to assist Fisher House in their mission, check out the Fisher House Foundation Facebook page.

Gary Sinise also has a foundation to assist our wounded veterans and their families.  Check out the Gary Sinise Foundation (https://www.garysinisefoundation.org).  They go above and beyond in helping wounded soldiers and their families in their time of need.

Both agencies accept cash donations, stock donations, vehicle donations, wills and trusts, or proceeds from a lemonade stand or the fundraiser of your choice.

Take care and stay safe,

Cindy

“Freedom and security are precious gifts that we, as Americans, should never take for granted. We must do all we can to extend our hand in times of need to those who willingly sacrifice each day to provide that freedom and security. While we can never do enough to show gratitude to our nation’s defenders, we can always do a little more.”
– Gary Sinise
