Kiva(https://www.kiva.org/) has to be one of my favorite causes. I have been investing with Kiva for the past several years. I say “investing” and not contributing, because Kiva gives you the opportunity to be a business partner and extend a hand up rather than a hand out. I support Kiva with a monthly investment and they keep me up to date with a monthly update on one of our “business partners” plus a photo of the family. Kiva doesn’t just throw money at a need. They are hands-on with training and advice. The most recent update I received from Heifer was about Patrick and his children, Precious and Emmy. They received a pregnant cow from Heifer, which has provided them with milk to sell and drink. The children have benefitted from the nourishment and the income from the milk sales has enabled their parents to afford school fees to send the girls to school.
One very important part of Heifer’s operation is “Passing on the Gift”. At this time one family gives one of their animals to another in the community. But it is so much more. They pass on their knowledge, gained through working with these animals, support and friendship. A contribution to Heifer is the first step for a community to grow together to better and stronger times.
I have written about Kiva before, but like all good ideas, it is worth revisiting. This gives us all an opportunity to be part of the family of man.
