The Skip1 ( https://skip1.org/) concept gives all of us the opportunity to skip something that you want, but don’t really need, no matter how big or how small, and use that money to help feed a child. In case you haven’t heard of Skip1, it was founded by a Hollywood producer, Shelene Bryan.
Shelene and her husband, Brice sponsored two African children. Shelene decided that she wanted to see if her two sponsored children really existed, and if they were really receiving their money. So she flew to Uganda and found her way to a village named Gaba, near Lake Victoria. She showed a local woman photos of her sponsored children. Luckily the woman recognized them and led Shelene to a hut in the jungle where the girl was living. She was also able to locate her sponsored boy. She could see, with her own eyes, that her support was truly making a difference in their lives.
So Shelene Bryan gave up her Hollywood career and started Skip1.org with a simple concept – skip something you don’t really need and use that money to help the world. There are many things that we can skip: a mobile app, a month of Netflix, the snack box on your next flight, a pay-per-view movie, candy, snack or soft drink, fancy flavored water, a fancy lunch, or (my favorite) a fancy coffee drink.
Here are some facts about hunger:
-Around the world, 690 million people regularly go to bed hungry
-Since 2014, the number of people affected by hunger has been on the rise
-If it continues at this rate, it’ll exceed 840 million by 2030
-9 million people die each year from hunger-related causes, that’s 25,000 people a day (including 10,000 children)*
September is the birthday month of Skip1. During Skip1’s birthday month, you can skip something on your birth date (such as the 14th) and donate that money to help someone in need.
Full disclosure here, when I was doing my background work on Skip1, they are not rated on Charity Navigator because they have less than $200,000 annual revenue, and are not required to submit the necessary documentation for a Charity Navigator ranking. This is not to say that they are not reputable, I don’t know. If you don’t feel comfortable going this route, you could contribute to any organization which fights hunger, there are many.
Thank you for stopping by.
